I have made a few purchases over the years that have definitely paid for themselves.
The one I will mention here is a steering wheel table for your car!
You might be asking why I am going to write about this.
Well, I’m so glad you asked.
I have gotten a lot of questions, and many others see me use it and ask me about it. So I figured, why not make a quick review of it?
After all, it’s something that I’m pleased I purchased, and I think you should give it a try!
Why Have A Small Table?
It all started with the desire to live out of my car eventually. Yep, that is the overall plan.
Having a converted Sprinter van would be the ultimate dream but not something I can currently afford.
I started looking at some used vans and buying one that someone else had converted. But, right now, my car is paid off (one of the best feelings ever), so for the time being, that is what I have.
Just for those who don’t know me, I don’t currently live in my Rav4 full time but use it as the weekend fun camping car.
While trying to find awesome, affordable gear for my vehicle, I have always wanted an easy way to eat in my driver’s seat. I have seen many options, but nothing was quite what I was looking for.
A small table allows you to write, read, and, most importantly, eat while sitting in your car. I eventually settled on a simple design from Amazon.
For me, it was a reasonable price (at $11.99 and offers free returns if it’s not for you), so why not? I figured if I didn’t like it, simply return it.
You cannot go wrong; I believe you will be happy you tried this. I’m just sayin’.
What Is It?
Pretty much what it sounds like, a steering wheel desk. If you want some of the specs:
- It fits steering wheels that are 42-50 mm thick
- And the length of the opening is 185-285 mm wide
- The thickness of the table is 25 mm
- Overall measurements is 425x285mm / 28x42x2cm / 11×16.5x.79″
- It weighs approximately .4 oz
- There are two sides (but I only use the flat side)
- You can generally store this in the back seat pocket
- It has four stars on Amazon (where I purchased mine)
How Do You Use It?
To use this awesome little table, you hook it on the lower or upper section of your steering wheel.
It depends on where it will fit. On my vehicle, it will work in either position, but I generally use it on the bottom part. This allows me to know that my wheels are straight.
The best part, this can be set up in a few seconds.
I keep this light table on my passenger seat (behind my seat organizer), which is an excellent way for it to always be accessible.
Not only is it a great way to have a meal. I have been using this daily, eating lunch at work, writing down notes from my road trips, and it’s been awesome to have since restaurants are not open.
SAFETY ALERT – Just so you know, you cannot use this table while driving. I think that should be easily understood, but in today’s world, you never know what people are going to do or try.
How Much Weight Can It Support?
To be completely honest, I’m not sure.
I have tested this desk with a few different options. But I have not weighed it to see the amount of weight it will support.
Remember, depending on the one you buy. Some are smaller or slightly larger.
I even found that the one I purchased can support a lot of weight. There are others that I have seen that use an additional hook to offer more support. But I choose against that version due to the quick setup and takedown.
If you are interested, I have placed my full 40 oz Hydro Flask and a 12″ sub sandwich. I also put my laptop on it to type an article I posted on the road. I have started calling it my “mobile office,” as seen in the photo below.
Would I Recommend It?
HELL YES, I would! I have even used it every day.
It’s so convenient and straightforward, and I’m so pleased with my purchase. I keep this in my car all the time now.
I would even go as far as to say it’s one of the best products I’ve purchased in a while.
It is also a handy platform I can take outside of my car and write on if needed.
Side story, when I was on my road trip, I had two people ask me about it.
One was at a campsite I was staying at, and the other was at Zion when I was chilling in my car having lunch.
A downside to consider, because that it is important to mention.
Sometimes my steering wheel isn’t in a place to use the table, but then I adjust it, and it is good to go. It might not be a big deal to some, but something worth mentioning.
So if you are interested in having a small table, I would highly recommend it!
Get One For Yourself
As I mentioned, a few items I have purchased have made my life easier. I enjoy things with multiple uses, but some things are just as useful as they were initially designed.
The table has been very beneficial because, as I stated above, most of the restaurants and coffee shops have been closed (this was a big deal while on my last road trip with the weather and COVID).
The size makes it perfect for me and even better than taking out my much larger REI table.
Don’t get me wrong, that table is fantastic and great for cooking on or sitting on, but when it’s raining or you want to eat something quick, it’s a hassle having to set it up.
Do you have something similar? If you have any additional questions about the table, let me know in the comments below.
Let me know if you like this review and if you want me to review anything else. As in gear I use or even the other stuff I have in my vehicle for car camping (my net, curtain set up, portable shower, or my new sleeping system).
Definitely going to look into this for longer road trips! Great information!
It is a fantastic piece to add to your car. I used it just yesterday to eat! It’s convenient, easy to use, and is a bit unique. I think you should get one!
This looks awesome!
I appreciate all the photos you included to help us visualize what it looks like and how it works. So handy to have a flat surface inside the car.
Thanks, and it’s honestly one of the best things I’ve purchased for my car (or car-version, because it’s not a van).
