I will just say it. I was pumped when I heard Athletic Greens was launching a sleep product. After years of drinking AG1 and recently becoming an Ambassador, I figured their new sleep supplement would be an easy win.
This is not your average glowing review. I bought AGZ with my own cash, not because someone sent me a shiny influencer kit or handed me a discount code. Just me, a credit card, and a hope that this would help me sleep better.

What I did not expect was five nights of some of the worst sleep I have had in a long time. By the end of the week, I had to stop. That was not easy to admit. I really wanted to love this stuff. But if you have followed me for any amount of time, you know I am all about sharing the real story.
Thinking about trying AGZ? Keep reading. Like all my reviews, this one covers it all. The good, the not so good, and why I pulled the plug after five nights.
If you’re Short on Time, here’s what you need to know about my AGZ experience:
- I quit after five nights because my sleep kept getting worse, even though it helped me relax at first
- The good stuff: it tastes great, mixes smooth, and kicked in around the 60-minute mark
- The bad: I woke up a lot, had vivid and weird dreams, and struggled to fall back asleep
- My deep sleep dropped from over an hour to just 31 minutes by the fifth night
- I still love AG1, and this does not change how I feel about Athletic Greens
- If you are curious, try one month and track how you actually sleep
- Everyone reacts differently, so this is just my personal experience
- It costs $79 a month, which is steep if it does not work for you

What Is AGZ and Why I Tried It
AGZ is Athletic Greens’ first step beyond their well-known greens powder. It is a melatonin-free sleep supplement that comes in three flavors: Mixed Berry, Chocolate Mint, and Chocolate. For this test, I chose Chocolate Mint.
The idea behind AGZ is simple but clever, as it is designed to support your sleep in three stages.
First, it helps you wind down with calming ingredients. Then it aims to improve your sleep quality throughout the night. Finally, it is supposed to help you wake up feeling refreshed, not foggy.

Here’s what’s actually in AGZ and why each ingredient is there:
Ashwagandha
Known for its stress support. It is an adaptogen, which means it helps your body handle whatever life throws at you.
L-theanine
Found in tea leaves, this one promotes relaxation without making you sleepy. If you have ever felt that calm focus after a cup of green tea, this is probably why.
Magtein (magnesium L-threonate)
A special type of magnesium that is better at getting into your brain. It is used here to support both cognitive function and sleep quality.
Saffron
Not just a fancy spice. It has been studied for mood support and its link to natural melatonin rhythms. Plus, it is one of the pricier ingredients in this mix.
Valerian root
A classic herbal remedy that has been used for ages to promote deeper sleep and help the body relax.
As someone who tends to stay up too late and occasionally struggles to get back to sleep in the middle of the night, the melatonin-free approach sounded promising. I have tried melatonin before. It was either way too mild or left me feeling like I got hit by a truck the next morning.
So I gave myself a plan. Seven nights. No skipping. Track how I felt each morning. Then write it all up in one honest review, which you are reading!
By night five, I had all the data I needed. And more than enough reasons to call it.

The Good Things About AGZ
Before I get into why I stopped taking AGZ, let’s talk about what it did well. There are real positives here, and it would not be fair to skip them.
It actually tastes good
Most sleep supplements either taste like ground-up vitamins or bad tea. But AGZ in Chocolate Mint? It was like a light hot chocolate with a touch of mint. Not too sweet, no weird aftertaste. Even though I wasn’t sleeping well, I still looked forward to drinking it.
It mixes like a dream
The included frother is legit. In less than 20 seconds, you have a smooth drink with no clumps or grit. I tried it both hot and cold. Cold worked great. Hot was richer but made me sweat a bit before bed.
The relaxation effect is real
This part surprised me. About an hour after drinking it, I felt calm and ready to wind down. It was consistent every night. Even when I was annoyed about waking up at 2 am, I still noticed that relaxed feeling beforehand.
High-quality ingredients
Athletic Greens is known for using solid ingredients, and AGZ keeps that bar high. The specific forms of magnesium and other compounds show they are paying attention to stuff that actually works.
The packaging feels premium
From the well-built frother to the single-serve packets, everything feels well-made. You can tell they wanted the product to feel high-end, and it does.
I want to be clear about something. If AGZ had helped my sleep, I would be raving about it. There are things this supplement does really well.
Before you decide on AGZ, check out my full AG1 review to see why I’ve been loyal to Athletic Greens for years,
even after this disappointing experience with their sleep supplement.

My 5 Night AGZ Experience
This is where things took a turn. As mentioned above, I documented how I felt each morning, and looking back now, the pattern is hard to ignore. The sleep quality started rough and only got worse from there.
Night 1: Promising Start with Early Warning Signs
I took my first packet around 9 at night. The taste blew past expectations, and I actually liked the whole routine of mixing it up. By 10, I felt relaxed and went to bed.
I fell asleep pretty fast, which was a win. But then came the first red flag. I woke up around 2 for a bathroom break, which is not unusual. What was strange was how long it took to fall back asleep. Normally, I am out again in 10 minutes. This time, I tossed for over an hour.
My Fitbit said I slept about 7 hours with 1 hour of deep sleep. That felt accurate. I woke up feeling like I barely rested.
Night 2: Mixed Signals
Same pattern. Tasted great, felt relaxed within the hour, fell asleep quickly. Then came the bathroom wake-up. But this time, I couldn’t get back to sleep.
The Fitbit showed nearly 2 hours of deep sleep, which would normally be great. But I kept waking up. The data confirmed multiple wake periods and choppy REM sleep.
This is when I started noticing a weird disconnect. The numbers looked okay, but my body felt wrecked.
Night 3: Hot Chocolate and Night Sweats
To change it up, I tried AGZ in hot water. Taste-wise, it was even better, like a fancy bedtime hot chocolate. But about half an hour later, I started sweating (full disclosure, it was a warm night where I live, and this happens when I drink tea at night as well).
That said, the relaxation kicked in as expected. And this turned out to be my best night overall. Fitbit showed nearly 2 hours of deep sleep and five hours of light sleep.
Still, the same pattern hit. In the middle of the night, wake up, and had a lot of trouble falling back asleep. I was starting to feel like something just was not working.
Night 4: The Red Flags Get Louder
By now, I was on the fence about stopping. The drink still tasted amazing. The 60-minute wind-down was still there. But sleep was not improving. Every morning, I didn’t feel refreshed, and it was pretty rough getting started.
That night, I had something rare for me, vivid, detailed dreams that actually woke me up. I usually don’t remember dreams at all, so this was new. And not in a good way. They were intense and left me feeling off.
This also means that my sleep was broken and restless. That usual 2 a.m. bathroom trip turned into a long stretch of lying awake with my mind racing. Fitbit showed just 50 minutes of deep sleep.
I felt completely drained the next morning.
Night 5: The Breaking Point
This was the night that ended it for me. I woke up feeling worse than I had in months. Fitbit said 31 minutes of deep sleep. That is not just bad. That is alarming.
The dreams were back, and I again woke up several times. Each time, it got harder to fall back asleep. By morning, I felt like I never slept at all.
That was the breaking point for me. I still had 25 packets left, but I had to stop. Sleep is too important to mess with. And no review is worth sacrificing your health.
A Quick Note from Athletic Greens
Since I was one of the first to try AGZ, they reached out to ask about my experience and if I would be willing to share with the team at Athletic Greens. I gave them the same feedback you just read here.
Their response was respectful and helpful, and I want to share it with you. Here is their summarized response:
They mentioned that while AGZ is designed to support better rest, individual reactions can vary. Some ingredients that relax most people might do the opposite for others. Vivid dreams and restlessness are uncommon, but not unheard of.
They suggested taking a break and checking in with a healthcare provider to figure out if AGZ is the right fit.
I really appreciated the honest reply. It matched the high standards I have come to expect from the AG1 team, even if this particular product did not work for me.

The Problems I Experienced
After five nights with AGZ, a few consistent issues kept showing up. These were not flukes. They happened every single night and became impossible to ignore.
-
Waking up in the middle of the night became a problem
I usually get up once and fall back asleep fast. With AGZ, that quick reset turned into long stretches of tossing and turning. - Dreams became vivid and disruptive
I almost never remember dreams. But with AGZ, I had intense ones that woke me up and left me feeling off. Some people might be into that. I was not. -
Sleep quality kept sliding downhill
I hoped there would be a rough start followed by improvement. Instead, things just got worse every night. -
Feeling relaxed before bed did not lead to solid sleep
The calm feeling showed up like clockwork. But it did not carry through the night. I still woke up tired and restless. -
I felt more tired each morning
By day five, I needed coffee just to keep moving. My energy was down, and the sleep data showed why.
The worst part is how out of character this all was. I usually sleep pretty well, even with brief wake-ups. The changes lined up exactly with the nights I took AGZ. That was enough of a sign for me.

AGZ Ingredients Analysis
After five nights of rough sleep, I wanted to dig into what might have caused the issues. I am not a doctor or a sleep expert, but I did a bit of research on the ingredients to see if anything stood out.
Ashwagandha
Usually marketed as a calming adaptogen, but it does not work that way for everyone. In some cases, especially at higher amounts or taken before bed, it can actually feel stimulating.
L-theanine
This one is typically well tolerated and is known for promoting calm focus. But it has also been linked to vivid dreams in certain people. That might help explain the strange and memorable dreams I had.
Magnesium
The form used in AGZ is designed to support brain function and sleep, but magnesium can also have a laxative effect. That might lead to more frequent bathroom wake-ups. Some forms can also be slightly energizing depending on how your body processes them.
Stacking multiple active compounds
Each of these ingredients might be helpful on its own, but putting them all together creates new variables. Depending on your body’s chemistry, that mix could be too much (which, I assume, is what I experienced).
Everyone responds differently
This might be the biggest factor of all. What helps one person sleep better might leave someone else wide awake. That, again, seems to be what happened in my case.
One final point. Just because AGZ did not work for me does not mean it won’t work for you. I always share my real and honest reviews of products, and this just shows how much individual response really matters.
One Last Thing
Before I wrap this up, I want to give a quick shout-out to AGZ’s customer service team. Not only did they respond to my message, but they were also genuinely kind and even happy that I plan on giving away the remaining AGZ I have to some friends.
And speaking of that, every single person I know who has tried AGZ has really liked it. That’s the part I want to be clear about. Just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it won’t work for you.
This review is based entirely on my own experience. I always want to be upfront with you, and I’m happy to report that I seem to be one of the few it didn’t work for.
If you’ve tried it, I’d like to hear what your experience was. If you haven’t tried it yet, it might be worth seeing for yourself. A lot of people I trust really enjoy it.

Is AGZ Worth It?
Let’s talk about value. At $79 a month, AGZ is not cheap. That is a serious investment in your sleep routine.
For the right person, it could be totally worth it
If you respond well to the ingredients and actually start sleeping better, then yes, the price might be justified. Sleep affects everything, such as mood, focus, recovery, and even how you show up for others. When something helps you sleep better, it can be priceless.
For someone like me, it just does not make sense
No matter how good it tastes or how high-quality the ingredients are, if the end result is worse sleep, then the product is not doing its job.
Why it costs what it does
Yes, you can buy magnesium, ashwagandha, and L-theanine for less. But AGZ uses specific forms, set ratios, and includes a frother (at least for now). You are also paying for the convenience and the trust behind the Athletic Greens brand.
Who might benefit from trying it?
- People who value a high-quality blend that is easy to mix
- Those who like adaptogens and respond well to them
- People who have a hard time winding down at night
- Anyone looking for a melatonin-free option
Who should probably pass
- If you are on a tight budget and prefer to test ingredients one by one
- Anyone who has had issues with ashwagandha or vivid dreams
- People who already sleep well with simpler solutions
- Anyone who reacts strongly to supplements
A more budget-friendly option
As I’m writing this, I wanted to throw something out there. If you are not sure how your body will react. You might want to try starting with one ingredient at a time. Magnesium or L-theanine are great first steps. You will get a better sense of what helps you sleep without dropping nearly eighty bucks on a full blend.

I’d love to hear how it works for you.

AGZ Didn’t Work for Me, But It Might for You
After five nights with AGZ, here is where I landed. This supplement has great taste, high-quality ingredients, and a clear purpose. The 60-minute wind-down effect was reliable. For the right person, this could be a solid part of a sleep routine.
I am just not that person.
The sleep issues I had were too much to ignore. As much as I wanted to stick it out for a full review, my sleep was not something I was willing to sacrifice.
That said, my experience is not the final word on AGZ. Sleep is personal. What left me exhausted might help someone else finally get some rest. The positive reviews out there are just as real as the tough time I had.
I still use AG1 every day and have had a great experience with it. If you are curious if AG1 is worth it, check out the post.
AGZ was not the right fit for me.
If you are thinking about trying AGZ, consider starting with one month. Track how you actually sleep, not just how calm you feel. And if things go sideways like they did for me, do not be afraid to stop.
Have you tried AGZ?
Don’t forget, I would really like to hear how it went for you.
Whether it helped or not, your story might help someone else figure out if this is worth a shot.
Being a manic bipolar, I’ve already strugggled with sleeping more than 5/) hours a night. But I’ve been working on getting it up to 6-7 hours now, and hopefully 8-9 hours. I’ve been keeping my sleep more consistent now, roughly 9pm – 5am as well, at least in that window. I tried AGZ two nights ago, and stopped after the second night. Literally everything you described hit me both nights. I felt calm at first, and slept, and I usually wake up 3 hours later to use the restroom, but then struggled to fall back asleep. And when I did, I had vivid wild dreams that made me disoriented and waking up. I was also more exhausted by wake up time. I gave up after the second day, and looked online to find your post, along with some Reddit comments about the same concerns. I won’t be using this again. And I have 16 more packets.
Hey Wayne, thanks so much for leaving a comment. I’m sorry to hear you had the same issues with AGZ. It’s such a bummer. I was really hoping it would work. I try to avoid taking melatonin every night, so this one had me hopeful.
Have you ever tried any kind of sleepy tea? Every now and then I go for the Trader Joe’s sleepy tea and it actually helps. The only downside is I usually end up needing to use the bathroom earlier than normal. Not exactly ideal when you’re finally relaxed.
AG1 actually reached out to me asking how it was going, so I gave them my honest feedback. If they haven’t contacted you yet, you might consider dropping them a quick message through their website. Could be helpful for both sides.
Just wanted to say thanks again for sharing your experience. Always good to know we’re not the only ones going through it.
I had great hopes for AGZ . I am travelling in a few weeks and the portability of the product was appealing. I also take thc which is legal in Canada but I can’t travel with it. I was quite sleepy after taking it but from the first night I woke up and had difficulty falling back asleep. By the sixth night I woke up at 5 and couldn’t get back to sleep.Last night I skipped the agz and had a much better sleep. I woke up but was able to fall asleep quickly. I also noticed an increase in daytime frequency . I have long term issues with my bladder- frequent UTI’s and bladder sensitivity. A failed experiment for me but hopefully can help others.
Thanks so much for sharing. I’m sad that it didn’t work for you, but I also had great hopes and sadly it DIDN’T work for me either. I think getting the word out there is important. But, I still stand and drink AG1 daily (which has helped a lot). I understand the issues with THC as many places you cannot travel with it…many people don’t understand that (even in California). Good luck trying to find something that works, and if you do I’d love to hear it. When I’m having issues sleeping I tend to go to basic tea (the sleepy tea). Thanks again for sharing!
It’s also full of junk. 7 carbs before bed? “Natural favors?” Natural favors can be almost anything, such as “from emulsifiers, solvents, and preservatives, to their carriers, such as glycerin, ethanol, or propylene glycol.” Only 10% of the base has to be from a plant or animal, and that source can be processed in any way. (From tasting table .com.)
If it’s such a great product, why don’t they tell us what those ingredients actually are?
(Many “natural favor” products are bloating or cause other problems.”)
I like how you mentioned that because I started learning more about “natural flavor” and it’s crazy. Thanks for the comment, it’s important to get the word out.
