We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post, but this does NOT cost you anything extra! Check out my full disclosure for more info.

Transforming your RAV4 into a comfy camping setup doesn’t require a full-blown van conversion or a huge budget. All you need is the right gear, a little bit of DIY grit, and a plan.

Below is a breakdown of the core gear that made my RAV4 build a reality, with a few lessons learned along the way.

Building Materials That Matter

Let’s kick things off with the materials. This is the stuff that gives your platform its backbone.

  • 1x2s and 2x2s These wood pieces are your skeleton. Lightweight, strong, and easy to work with.
  • 1/2″ Plywood The sweet spot between strength and weight. It’s your sleeping surface, so make it count.
  • 3M Adhesive Spray Sounds fancy, but this stuff is great for locking things in, especially that auto carpet.
  • Piano Hinges Long hinges that let you flip open storage panels like a boss.
  • Cam Locks Keep those panels from popping open on bumpy roads. Trust me, you’ll want these.
  • Wood Glue, Screws, Nails The classic trio for building anything solid.
  • Auto Carpet Not just for looks. It adds grip, quiets things down, and keeps the platform from looking like your uncle’s shed project.

Tools That Make Life Easier

You can have all the gear, but without tools, you’re basically playing Jenga with wood.

  • Cardboard Templates Don’t eyeball it. Templates are the only way to fit things right.
  • Table Saw or Circular Saw Clean cuts mean less cussing.
  • Power Drill You’ll use this more than anything else. Pre-drill and screw your heart out.
  • Nail Gun Not essential, but if you have one, it speeds things up big time.

Beyond the Build: Gear for Comfort and Sanity

Once your platform is in place, you’ll want to actually enjoy using it. Here’s what helps:

  • Storage Bins and Organizers Use that space under the platform. Stackable bins keep things tidy and accessible.
  • Foldable Chairs, Tables, and Cookware Space savers that still feel like creature comforts.
  • Modular Containers Great for food and cooking supplies. You’ll be shocked how much you can fit when it’s organized.
  • Multi Purpose Items My rule, if it can’t do two things, it stays home.
  • Roof Rack or Cargo Box For bikes, paddleboards, or anything bulky that eats up interior space.
  • Sleeping Pad or Air Mattress Sleep matters. Don’t skimp here.
  • Window Covers and Bug Screens Privacy, insulation, and a bug free breeze, yes please.
  • Magnets and Hooks Perfect for hanging lights, hats, or gear. Your metal car is basically a blank wall of possibilities.

Putting it all together, this build isn’t just about sleeping in your RAV4. It’s about making it feel like your home on the road. A place that’s not just functional but cozy too.
